The story of AutoCAD has been one of gradual innovation and continual improvement. Beginning with a single application known as Graphit! in 1981, Autodesk sold the same “Graphit” application as a standalone, stand-alone vector drawing program called AutoCAD. Graphit was developed by Paul Mark, who left Autodesk in 1987. In 1993, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD R14, a major revision to the product. For the first time, the tools and capabilities of AutoCAD were available in a single package, and could be used for both 2D drafting and 2D and 3D modeling. For example, a designer could easily create a detailed 2D floor plan, using two-dimensional drafting tools, and then 3D-edit the plan as a solid model.

In March 2002, Autodesk announced its intentions to purchase Cadsoft Inc., the developer of MicroStation, for $650 million. Cadsoft was spun off as a separate company in 2002. As Autodesk was getting ready to acquire the MicroStation assets, Cadsoft continued to develop and support the legacy line of applications. Cadsoft’s Mac user interface (UI) and other aspects of the MicroStation suite were retained until the acquisition. While no-one in Autodesk continued to support the MicroStation legacy applications, most customers never realized that Autodesk had dropped the support, and even some Autodesk engineers didn’t realize that MicroStation had been dropped. During the Autodesk acquisition of Cadsoft, the MicroStation legacy products were renamed Autocad and later AutoCAD, in an attempt to conceal the fact that MicroStation no longer existed.

AutoCAD LT, Autocad, and Autodesk dropped all support of the legacy MicroStation product lines after the Autodesk acquisition of Cadsoft. MicroStation remained available for licensing, but for an additional cost. Autocad LT and AutoCAD LT became the official successors to the MicroStation product lines.

In February 2017, Autodesk acquired the assets of Synopsys to enhance its software portfolio. The combined company is now known as Autodesk.

Programming languages used for AutoCAD customization

See also: Autocad.LSP

AutoCAD is the first CAD application to include a programming language specifically for AutoCAD, called Autocad.LSP (or Autocad.LSP). It was initially developed by Gil C. Merritt of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Merritt obtained a license from Autodesk and built a proprietary, commercial-level AutoCAD LSP Language. This commercial-level LSP language was marketed to AutoCAD users as a way to program AutoCAD and developed a large following of AutoCAD users.

However, by 2006, Autodesk had begun to encourage its customers to use the free-to-download AutoCAD SDK (software development kit). The SDK did not have a commercial-level LSP language, but it supported many programming languages, including:
Delphi (first officially supported programming language for AutoCAD in 2003)
Visual Basic

With the release of AutoCAD 2008, support for C# and Visual Basic programming language was added, allowing.NET Framework development and the Visual Basic Add-In technology to be used.

Over time, the commercial LISP language was eliminated and the SDK languages became the primary AutoCAD programming languages. C# and Visual Basic.NET and JScript are the primary languages available today. VBScript support has been retired.

A major downside of AutoCAD LISP was that it required the user to install AutoCAD and set up a development environment, meaning it was not available on the user’s operating system. Autodesk did release the source code for AutoCAD LISP, and developers can now develop their own AutoCAD LISP language.

AutoLISP (Autocad.Autolisp or AutoCAD.Autolisp) is a programming language for AutoCAD that allows users to modify AutoCAD and create their own custom AutoCAD macros. It can be used to automate AutoCAD or perform modification tasks by writing computer code. It was initially developed by Allen Miller of the University of Tennessee, and patented by Miller in 1995. It is included with AutoCAD and is available on the AutoCAD Application Store.

Surprise! Thomas James Healey, son of Mary Anne Healey, was named as being a survivor of the liner RMS Titanic. Mary Anne, who was born in Ireland, is his great-great aunt.

He was listed as being 13 years of age on the Titanic and survived the liner’s sinking on April 15th 1912. Unfortunately, it is unknown what happened to him after the wreck.

“Hi, I’m MaryAnneHealey,” said in a statement. “I’m thrilled that the Titanic has finally come home. We’re so thankful that through my research and networking with the Titanic Historical Society, I discovered a link to my grandfather and then his descendants. He survived the Titanic! I can’t say enough about how amazing this is. He is 97 years old today, so we’re celebrating with a cake and some champagne!”

After finding the connection, went to work, and started sending letters to the Healey family in Ireland and even tracked down one of the people who had been involved in the Titanic inquiry.

The final discovery came when received a handwritten letter from Thomas James Healey’s grandson, Michael Jones.

Jones is quoted as saying, “I am writing on behalf of my father, who was a young man at the time of the Titanic. He went down with his mother and we believe he died with her. But, he never mentioned to anyone that he was a survivor, or even a passenger. So, we would like to thank MaryAnne Healey and her family, especially for their diligent search that lead to finding my father and his family and learning of this

What’s New In?

New to AutoCAD? The 2018 edition of AutoCAD for Windows will be end of life in December 2019 and all new subscribers will get a free copy of AutoCAD 2019. With AutoCAD 2019, you’ll have all of the latest features and enhancements.

AutoCAD for Windows offers two options for organizing and documenting your drawings. The Draw Menu and the QuickDraw panel on the right side of the screen.

The Draw Menu organizes your drawings by drawing style. All drawings can be opened in 2D and 3D views, detailed, hidden, as layered, or rendered in different output types. The Draw Menu also organizes drawings by page and lets you easily find drawings that have been organized by drawing style. The Draw Menu can be accessed by pressing the Tab key on your keyboard or by clicking on the Draw Menu icon at the bottom right corner of the screen.

The QuickDraw panel allows you to navigate to a drawing from a file list, add comments and dimensions, or add blocks and other visual aids to your drawings. QuickDraw can be accessed by pressing the Tab key on your keyboard or by clicking on the QuickDraw icon on the bottom right of the screen.

The QuickDraw panel is where you can add lines, arrows, tables, and comments. You can add dimensions and annotate your drawings. All drawings have a default drawing template that contains basic drawing controls and commands. When you are working on a drawing, you can customize your template by adding controls you need and removing controls you don’t. Your template is saved with the drawing.

When you are finished working on a drawing, you can share the drawing as a print or pdf file. You can email it, create a project file, or send it to the Autodesk Cloud. The Cloud enables you to access, organize, and share your drawings from any device, and you can use the same drawing on any device. See the Autodesk Cloud for more information on sharing.

Experience the power of 2D and 3D drawing. Drawings have advanced capabilities with a new Pen Select and Lasso drawing tools, including:

Pen Select: Automatically detects the end of the line you create, determines the start of the line to be drawn, and creates a line using the start and end points of the detected line.

Automatically detects the end of the line you create, determines the start of the line to be drawn, and creates a line using the start and end
