the folkloric use of medicinal plants for the treatment of cancer has gained more attention in recent years due to the concerns over the side effects caused by the use of synthetic chemotherapeutic agents which are often harmful or ineffective. the review is an attempt to provide a brief evaluation of all the medicinal herbs that have been reported to have some anticancer properties. the herbal remedies obtained from the indigenous communities and the knowledge about their toxicity and anticancer activity has been obtained from the literature available and further studies are needed to validate the same.

among a wide variety of cancers, breast cancer is the most lethal cancer in women. most of the drugs used for the treatment of breast cancer have shown to be toxic in nature and the emergence of drug resistance compromises the therapeutic efficacy of most of the anticancer drugs. in the last few years there has been a renewed interest on using medicinal herbs for the treatment of breast cancer and the present review is an attempt to provide a brief evaluation of all the medicinal herbs that have been reported to have anticancer properties against breast cancer.

breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women; the three main risk factors that can increase the risk of breast cancer are: (i) age; (ii) family history; (iii) gender (with the highest risk for women). most of the breast cancers are sporadic in nature (non-hereditary) and 90% of the cases are diagnosed at advanced stages. in case of advanced breast cancer, treatment is mainly with chemo-therapies and/or radiotherapy. these chemo-therapies have multiple side effects and the risk of recurrence is high. drug-resistant cancer cells are more likely to develop which in turn could lead to the progression of the cancer. in order to overcome these drawbacks, herbal supplements are being increasingly used as an alternative to the conventional treatment. ethnopharmacological surveys and in-vitro and in-vivo studies on medicinal herbs has shown that a number of herbs are having promising anticancer properties. in recent years, the development of phytochemical screening tools has facilitated the rapid screening of anticancer herbal ingredients. however, the absence of conclusive scientific reports on the bioactivities of these herbs and development of a well-defined phytochemical fingerprint has limited the standardization of herbal products.
