Sisters Making It For Themselves
I wish there were a way to say it without someone calling me a drama queen. I am a drama queen, but not just on any given day, but definitely on some days. Yesterday was such a day. The day after my birthday I had to celebrate with my mom and my sister in the city. I spent most of my life in the city and the suburbs. I love NYC, but I am the kind of person who does best in small, intimate places. It’s the air. It makes me think. The stress melts away. I always feel like I’m going to get mugged. But, I’m making this very short because I wanted to give my sister the big sister version. When you know I’m being dramatic (and, believe me, I am) I had the best time with my sister yesterday. She was in a good mood and enjoying herself (she said as much). Even though I can’t stand to be around kids, I have a certain affection for them (and, I will admit, love being around them). She took us to a coffee shop with an awesome piano player, got us some baked goods and had us listen to some awesome music (Sia, ‘Breathe Me’ and ‘Doubt’). It was really really nice. Harry C. VanMeter (June 8, 1922 – August 14, 2014) was a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and previously was a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee.
Education and career
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, VanMeter received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tennessee in 1945. He received a Juris Doctor from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1948. He was in private practice in Memphis from 1948 to 1961, and was a special counsel to the Senate Select Committee on Internal Security from 1960 to 1961. He was an assistant district attorney of the Thirteenth Judicial District of Tennessee from 1963 to 1967.
Federal judicial service
On September 18, 1967, VanMeter was nominated by President Lyndon B. Johnson to a seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee vacated by Judge George P. Cockrill. VanMeter was confirmed by the United States Senate on October 18, 1967, and received his commission the same day. His service terminated on September 11, 1975, due to elevation to the Sixth Circuit.
VanMeter was nominated by President Gerald Ford on August 7, 1975, to a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit vacated by Judge Paul J. Freeborn. He was confirmed by the Senate on September 12, 1975, and received his commission the same day. He served as Chief Judge from 1987 to 1989, assuming senior status on November 30, 1989. His service terminated on August 14, 2014, due to his death.
