To examine and compare the reliability and utility of neuropsychological tests for preoperative assessment of patients with intracranial meningioma. Prospective study. University-based hospital and outpatient clinic. Sixty-seven patients undergoing surgery for intracranial meningioma (group I) and 22 healthy controls (group II) were included. Mean age in group I was 57.4 years (range, 37-83 y), and in group II, it was 47.3 years (range, 23-70 y). Test battery included 3 cognitive tests (inhibition, visual-spatial construction, and simple reaction time), and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Mini-Mental State Examination, Clock Drawing Test, and the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status were used for the comparison. The patients were preoperatively administered the tests, and the preoperative and postoperative results were compared. The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed a significantly worse performance in group I on the MoCA (P = 0.000) and the Clock Drawing Test (P = 0.000). Visual-spatial construction, repetition, and cognitive inhibition tests showed similar results (P = 0.29, P = 0.92, P = 0.91, respectively). The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status showed a significant difference (P = 0.000) for the speed of the cognitive process. The inhibition and visual-spatial construction tests did not show a significant difference (P = 0.81, P = 0.73, respectively), but the speed of the cognitive process did. The cognitive function tests (MoCA, Clock Drawing Test, and visual-spatial construction) are more reliable than the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status. However, visual-spatial construction was the only statistically significant test, with the others (inhibition and speed) showing similar results.Q:
