Adobe Photoshop is a powerful and widely used graphics editing software. It has a range of built-in tools and filters that allow users to enhance and develop digital photographs. In addition, Photoshop provides functionality in the areas of image composition, color correction and retouching. Photoshop is also well-known for its use in the design of brochures, websites and other commercial products. Adobe Photoshop is available in several versions, each of which comes with a different set of tools and features.
As for source files, we also understand that Lightroom 4 is its own file format. So, we bring all sources into Lightroom 4 in this format. Lightroom 5 files may come in the PSD format. Or if exported from Lightroom 4 files and produced by using the PSD to JPEG converter, they may also be in the PSD format. The benefit of this is that you can make several rounds of adjustments without saving the file, and you can always create a new version of the file to work on without having to lose any changes. However, there is one drawback—you cannot save files in Lightroom 5 in any other format than the PSD format. So, you have to convert from PSD to JPEG before using any other converter or other image formats. This was not a major problem for me. I never needed to open/convert files that were not already in the PSD format. In general archives, you will also get the first import of your archive as a PSD file. Other exported files that are not archives may also be in PSD format. For those who edit and work with various image formats, Lightroom 5 has you covered by bringing these files into the PSD format.
Lightroom 5 will probably be available in both languages—English and French. We are not sure yet, but it’s being designed to cater for more markets than just the US. Support for other technical languages is being looked at, too.
As stated earlier, I really like using Lightroom. However as it currently stands I can use it for the things I like it for and that’s really it. It does have some bugs and it lacks basic stuff like layers. Also it is a huge download and it is not free. To be able to use it I have to pay Adobe around 30€ per year. And that is not cheap. I would imagine most people use it for basic tasks and use Photoshop for more advanced ones. But as long as it is free Adobe won’t take it away from us. I mean they own the free/open source community – don’t they increase the possibilities in that community? I know a lot of people that can use Lightroom because they have no Photoshop, that lightroom is a nice tool for editing RAW images. But if you want to make good looking images proper Photoshop is much better suited. And the way Photoshop works in combination with PS is a big plus is my opinion. That’s why I write this review, to let other people know about what to expect from Lightroom, and to give Adobe a reason why they should support their own product.
