Adobe’s new Photoshop Mix feature is a cool way to immediately mix and match two images to create a third image. But in my time with Photoshop Mix, it mostly just impressed me for its ability to dial right in quite quickly, and I wonder if anyone outside of Adobe appreciates the full range of the app’s functionality.

In the app’s settings, you find lots of hidden and semi-hidden icons and settings. Such as the ability to realize just how many filters currently on a layer can be applied, or if you’re using Shadow Quality, which can dramatically impact performance or image quality. As well, under Video Editing Settings, you can adjust quality settings for the Video Clip Editor, Effects panel and Preset Manager. Then you can manually adjust levels for Audio Waveforms in your Sound panel.

To me, the most important new features in this new version work well in tandem with each other. In the Collection panel, the ability to save existing documents as templates — one of my favorite features of Photoshop — is now on par with the ability to convert a collection into a website, which helps to save space. Similarly, in recent versions of Photoshop, the ability to remove a document’s first or last layer has been buried in a separate panel, separate from the adjustment panel. Now, that functionality is also saved as a template, which makes it easier to find and use, as well.

You can be relatively certain that everything you do in Photoshop CC will work with virtually every other image editing app with at least one-year’s support. Some will even see improvements, like the addition of a Facial Recognition custom filter, which securely deletes faces detected in an image. Transparency masks have also received a big update, with the ability to view the core image and a new method for drawing out the transparency regions of files, and even a new option to blend the layer mask smoothly into a new layer. Overall, I think Elements 12’s basic editing features, though of course much slower than Photoshop, are where they really shine. In Elements, for example, all of the playback, 2D / 3D and Smart Filters can be accessed via a one-click pop-up menu, which makes it much simpler to quickly access features without having to leave the app.

Next, within the list of blending options, you’ll see the Flow & Clarity tool.
