I’ve been a Photoshop user, in one form or another, since the early 1990’s. I remember the Acorn days, of new computers, new printers, new camera systems with RAW and Fax mode, new software to process (or at least, store) that data. The advent of Photoshop changed the way I worked. It introduced the photographer into a new world of editing, compositing and post-processing. It brought a new dimension of creativity to the craft.
Since then, things have changed. Around the early 2000’s, most of us switched to JPEG, and most of us made peace with colour spaces. A new generation of photographers was being born, and most of the tools to help them become well rounded in the art of making art were being made. Photoshop is still around, selling like hot cakes. The number of downloads for CS obviously exceeds its number of sales.
However there are many photographers, as there are artists, that have been with Photoshop for years, and will continue to be with it for a long time to come. In these cases, the use of a raw converter provides a few level of transparency over the Adobe system, whereby an artist may comfortably move amongst a variety of applications without surrendering all of the advantages of their chosen software.
