Marilyn had a stormy relationship with married former agent and manager, Joe DiMaggio, known for his power hitting hitting. She was only 19 when he broke off their engagement and refused to speak with her after her supposed affair with actor Arthur Miller. DiMaggio later married baseball star Joe Garagliaa. She collaborated with screenwriter Arthur Miller on “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, “Bus Stop”, and “The Seven Year Itch” and had a brief affair with her co-star James Dean. Dean committed suicide in 1955.
Marilyn’s rich and complicated life is the subject of many books and documentaries, mostly fact based and critical rather than biographic. But just about anything “Marilyn” means money, and the Monroe name is equally important the names of her family, friends, and lovers considered “tragic”. My basic interest is in her films and my research is historical rather than psychoanalytic.
