Parvathy Prabhu, in her book V. Unakka vayil, writes that the film had a negligible impact outside of Tamil Nadu.[22] According to Jeevan, who worked on the film’s pre-production, “Indian was very well received in Tamil Nadu, but not at all well received elsewhere, and ‘it never had a chance for theatrical distribution outside of the state'”.[20] Despite being a box office success, the film’s revenue was disputed by the competing distributor. This dispute resulted in the Karnataka film censor board banning the film and delaying its release by 30 days.[27] The film’s soundtrack and score were composed by A. R. Rahman, who also composed the soundtrack for Shankar’s previous film Kaadhal, and took a great deal of time to complete. It was only after the censor board’s ban was lifted that Shankar was invited to attend the audio launch function. Rahman stated that the censor board had delayed the release of the film to further promote his music, which eventually garnered him the National Film Award for Best Music Direction.[20]

Shankar was working on a script that had a title change every three weeks. He developed the idea while on vacation, and had been working on it since that time, when Chenchu Ramachari of the director Shankar’s production house suggested that he use the title Indian. Following suit, Shankar chose ‘Indian’ for the title of one of the main characters in the film. The title was selected by the director, and was not chosen by the production house, or the actor.[1][2]

The film’s Tamil cast included Kamal Haasan as V. Iyer, a corrupt policeman and villain, and Nedumudi Venu as Janakarajan, a former Indian freedom fighter, whose son is a journalist. The supporting cast featured Sukanya, Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Suresh and Mohan *Sardesai.^[29] Haasan’s performance in the film earned him the Filmfare Best Actor Award. His role as a corrupt policeman who is coerced into turning against the villain who made him a corrupt policeman made him a villain role par excellence.
