Diablo II comes in many different “versions” or “patches”. The “standard” patches, by far the most common version, include just the character files and the main menu files. Certain optional mods are also typically included in this patch. For example, the “row-based” inventory, the “inventory + item drops” mod, and certain monster packs. Using the standard “Vanilla” patch puts the minimum amount of work to get Diablo II running on a system.
If you only have the CD key for Diablo II, then the development team releases a patch-CD, also called a “Diablo II patch download”. Similar to the “standard” CD (which contains the vanilla-patch), this patch-CD will give you Diablo II with all the same features. However, whereas the standard CD packages just the vanilla patch files, the patch-CD packages other files, such as the patch file itself, the standard CD-files (the patch-CD is printed on CD-R media), and some guide files (to help you setup your characters).
A more refined version of this patch-CD is sometimes released. This version comes mixed with the patch-CD, so it is slightly more difficult to unpack. Once unpackaged, the patch-CD will appear in the same folder. As patches for Diablo II are released, they will be placed in a folder with a suffix of the current patch number (e.g. 1.13). You can follow the instructions for unpacking a normal patch, to get Diablo II with these patch-files.
Even if you purchase Diablo II, you will receive an.exe file called Diablo II.exe. Inside this file is another program, called a “.exe file manager”, which will respond to activation keystrokes. The purpose of this “.exe file manager” program is to install, update, and uninstall the game software. To install a patch, simply start Diablo II.exe.
