The cost of Superman II ballooned to $108 million, and the $45 million spent on the dubbing alone was the most expensive sound-film dubbing in history. Per the financial success of the film, Ilya Salkind oversaw the filming of the Return of Superman music video to promote the movie.

I have included this sequence from the Donner Cut on a number of occasions.

The fight of Superman and Doomsday appears in the UK disc of the Donner Cut, though the theatrical version, if I’m not mistaken. Only some flying shots of the fight appear on the UK disc.

As the cancellation of Superman II seemed imminent, Ilya Salkind began lobbying Warner Bros. to release the film in Europe, where it had already enjoyed success. Donner recalled, “We were negotiating with [Warner Bros.] in Europe for Superman II to be the first Superman film to be released in Europe, and everybody loved it. Then all of a sudden, the Salkinds… were getting very angry at Warner Brothers for mishandling the situation, and they reached out to me, saying I was not the right guy for the second movie. But nobody ever asked me. They just decided that was I was not the right guy, I was fired. So that was that. I thought it was pretty funny, actually. They said he is not the right guy, and that’s the end of it. Manohla Dargis really came to my rescue and wrote an article that saved me, because nobody at Warner Brothers knew anything about me. She gave me a lot of credit for making those two movies. She really came to my rescue and got me some work, because she was trying to help me out.
