After the outbreak of the T-virus in Raccoon City in March of 1997, Umbrella scientist Umbrella Agent Ada Wong continues her research on the disease-carrying “T-virus” to create a new biological weapon capable of infecting the entire human population. In June of that year, Dr. Birkin investigates Wong’s research at Pinewood’s underground T-virus lab; Birkin proceeds to blow up a tank containing the virus, killing Wong and sending both of them plummeting to the ground. During his fall, a piece of glass shatters, revealing the true form of Birkin’s head, a hollow skull.

Since the events of the first two games, Ada Wong works for Black Watch, a secret paramilitary group in charge of research concerning the T-virus, in England at a secret facility called “Pinewood” and leads an effort to neutralize the viral threat by transforming the human population into cyborgs. In August of 1997 Umbrella Agent Sigma forces Ada and her colleague Sherry Marner to discover why antiserum experiments have failed, leading them to investigate a dilapidated factory in the surrounding area. Sigma took Sherry and unravels the facility, kidnapping Ada in order to extract her memories. Unfortunately, Sigma is killed by T-virus-affected zombies.

After the events of Resident Evil 4 and the destruction of Raccoon City, Umbrella has created a new organization called the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) to aid with research concerning bio-organic weapons. In March 2004, BSAA official Parker Luciani is summoned to the Mediterranean city of Tyrua by his colleague Jessica Sherawat to examine the remains of Tyrua after it was razed by solar energy, believing that the irradiated soil can be tested for toxic radiation.

It is discovered that a cluster of atomic bombs lies under Tyrua. At this point, BSAA Agent Carlos Oliveira protests against Luciani’s decision in obeying orders instead of attempting to defuse the bombs, which results in the blasts detonating the bombs.
