The minute I heard about this movie, I knew I had to be a part of it. Or as they say, I MUST KNOW MORE.
‘Matrumu Bhoomi’ a.k.a A rare South Indian film based on the Malaiyadu or the Nasrani community, from Tamil Nadu in a region known as the ‘Fenugreek Belt’. A Malaiyadu/Nasrani is a Tamil Christian, who are also called ‘Jacobite’, who choose to remain under the jurisdiction of the Pope or Roman Catholic to preserve their identity. The few Malaiyadu/Nasranis in the Northeast,India are true enthusiasts when it comes to their culture and language. They are a rather reclusive, but gifted people who have managed to retain their culture fully intact. The movie had the vibe of a period drama with lighthearted humor.
‘Thuppakki’ is a tale about a troubled life of a Malaiyadu, a moderately famous fire-breather (fire-walking) there who tries to avoid social norms in a small town. His love life is haunted by being right and wrong, loyalty and betrayal as well as assuring a girl he’s not a homosexual (in 3 languages). As the story unfolds from one tragedy to another, the N-girl is constantly torn between the love of a fire-breather and a fire-breathing lover.
Mohanlal cuts a fine figure as ‘the wronged decent fire-breathing lover’ in his characteristic role, complete with awesome actions.
Ma.selvi acts out a surprisingly well-rounded character flaw. A Nasrani girl born in a decent family from a town in Malnad, she lives a troubled and single life, due to a trap set up by her uncle, an opportunist.
“As an actor, Vijay is very confident,” says Devi Nambi Narayanan, in his debut in Tamil cinema. His talkative and confident-solicited personality comes across easily on screen. There are shades of Gemini Man’s Vijay in his funny and sarcastic dialogues, especially in the sidelines.
Thuppakki is a must watch movie for Vijay fans. Vijay’s bold and charismatic appearance drives us crazy. Scenes were beautifully scripted and doesn’t bore us anywhere, except the Vennilavae song. Dialogues are evenly heaped and fits impeccably. Stunts!! Vijay has given his best and the best ever, with reduced gun shots and using knives & muscles also.VJ has given his best and the best ever, with reduced gun shots and using knives & muscles also. As a director,Murugadoss, as a director, achieves better than his previous movies Santosh Sivan’s Cinematography brings delight and freshness.Harris Jayaraj’s BGM and songs are rocking on screen and stylishly made, Kajal, the charming lady, molds perfectly with Vijay. Vidyut as a sleeper cell head, portrayess manliness superbly, and Overall its Illayathalapathy Vijay who deserves the applaud for an wholesome entertainer.
