The previous title Ueda had been involved with was Ico, which was also developed at Sony’s Japan Studio but while in development, it was put on hold indefinitely after Sony’s management shifted directions and directions for the Ico team were lost. Ico emerged on the PlayStation 2’s launch day, and was a critical success, winning many awards and selling over 2 million copies, nearly all of which came from Japan, and was later licensed for a successful release on the PC and the Xbox 360.[12][13]
The Last Guardian was released with very little fanfare on PlayStation 3, only supported digitally with no boxed copies available. A fan-made video compilation bundled with a handful of games, which included a link to the unofficial Last Guardian website, was also released.[12][4] It has become something of a cult icon, although it sells only around one million copies world-wide, roughly half of which is estimated to have come from Japan.[7]
Reviewing the game for IGN, Justin Calvert gave an overall positive review, saying that the game was enjoyable and rewarding to play, but ultimately it was Ueda’s “vision and passion” that made the game stand out from other games on the PlayStation 3.[30] The staff of Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine awarded it the 2010 Outstanding Debut award.[8]
