With about a month or two before launch, MacRumors has received a preview build (Build 10.1.5) of the new version Lightroom. It had been reported on Twitter that the product had been released on January 22, 2013. In the meantime, I took a few hours and pre-installed the build on my MacBook Pro and started investigating the new features in-depth. I put together a short comparison with previous versions of Lightroom and with Photoshop CS6 as far as editing speed, opening documents, and import speed. This won’t be a full review, but I will try to cover the new features and their impact. Is it worth the update, and have the people behind Lightroom done a good job?
It’s important to note a bit about the new features and how they were added in. Adobe’s Lightroom development team doesn’t just rush out a major release every year. Instead, they try to balance updates so they don’t disrupt life.
For Lightroom 5, one of the big features is “undo.” We’ll talk about it more in another article, but it essentially means that you can undo a previous action without having to start over from scratch. With “undo,” you can fix typos and other mistakes in no time.
Another huge change is that Lightroom now improves itself and becomes more intelligent. It knows what you have actually done (unlike previous versions of Lightroom, which just displayed all the changes you made), and it is constantly improving. Essentially, it becomes a better version of Google Chrome.
Ok, we’re back. Basically what I’m saying is that there is no such thing as a one stop shop, and which tool you start with will depend on what you want to do. Here are some of the most frequently used tools in Photoshop, as well as some tutorials.
The best way to learn Adobe Photoshop is to use it – even if you end up tossing most of what you learn. Elements still has a decent photo editor compared to older versions, and is a very affordable alternative.
Up until now I have not recommended Photoshop because of the costs involved. As a photographer, I’m well aware of the financial impact that they can have on a working photographer. For example, I don’t think that Photoshop Elements is a durable option; it looks cheap. I know for a fact that that’s NOT the case with Adobe Photoshop. Although, if you are working with cheap cameras, and/or film, and/or just want to go basic with your editing, then Elements is the best choice. Although I am a great fan of Photoshop, I have taken an objective look at Elements, and it is okay. However, Adobe Photoshop is always the best choice for most professionals.
