Still, I do have to admit that some users may find the new interface a bit daunting. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the best layout for organizing a workflow that I have seen since I last used Photoshop. I like that folders contain what they should, and that I don’t have to flip in and out of multiple panels just to find the one I need. Combined with the improved tool-tips, and the new layers panel, there’s a surprisingly tight integration among the various panels. A new “Smart Preview” feature helps to find the layers panel by way of a new panel, automatically opening its sister panel, the Layers panel. This feature mostly works as advertised, unfortunately, and is more like a bit of a gimmick than a powerful new tool.

The main issues are the naming scheme for layers and Smart Preview. I don’t feel like there’s much to separate the layers based on type – I think that might be a subject for another article, but I don’t see it improving in the future. As for the preview pane, I would have appreciated an option to lock it to the top panel, when I’m working on other assets, to prevent accidental manipulation (as happened to me just now, for example, when I locked the left side of the work area to prevent it from having its own scroll bar.) On the plus side, the ability to snap and align objects to future and past layers is great.
