I tried to use DNG as the source file in the new method to open from Photoshop to Lightroom, so as not to lose the adjustment layers. In the old method, I could lose those adjustment layers, but now that there’s a new method to fix this problem, it seems you can’t use EPD any longer.
Apparently, EPD is a type of layer that the Photoshop engine can understand, but LR can’t.
I can’t validate the new method, because I need to reboot my computer to work. If you can verify it, I will be glad to see it. And thanks for the explanation. 😀

Hi Shingo! It seems that I captured the file in the Lightroom Preview window with the “Capture settings” page selected, then the “Adjustment Layers” tab was selected, moved the slider to the “Enable” button, and was able to save the DNG file as usual. I saved it after changing the “Enable” button to “Disable”. I thought that would be the end of it, but it seemed that when the file was opened in Photoshop, it was still picking up the adjustment layers, despite them being disabled. However, after closing Photoshop and opening the same file in Lightroom, it didn’t load the layers. I’m not sure why. ? (It seems like the DMG file refuses to load with “Enable” disabled in Photoshop, but I haven’t tested this sufficiently yet. Is this right?)
I opened the same file in Lightroom after I saved the DNG file and then opened it in Photoshop. This time it didn’t load the adjustment layers. I saved it again but it was the same. I saved it a third time, this time it loaded all of the adjustment layers. All of them.

There’s been a lot of chatter about the future direction of digital imaging over the last decade, and, we think, we have seen the start of a new chapter in the evolution of digital imaging in image editing. As such, our product roadmap for 2019 and 2020 is a fully native architecture for Photoshop on macOS. (And for future releases, it will also be supported on Windows with the latest 18.0 version of Windows only.) A native architecture means that features like 3D, layers, and layer groups are all built into an application and are available to all versions of Photoshop, as well as being part of the native OpenGL and Metal graphics APIs. This also means that we can start to do things with more stability. That’s great news, especially for users.
With that out of the way, I hope you can see that the future of Photoshop looks very exciting. I’d like to think that I’d still be at Photoshop CS5.5 (and would have stopped there!), but if I haven’t I’ll be there for the launches of the next Photoshop and Photoshop Elements software.
