While Lightroom is being updated every year, sometimes making you think it’s the most modern software, Photoshop is, sadly, lagging behind. All the same, Photoshop is a huge name in digital-photo editing, and with the introduction of CC products, even the traditional version may not be too far behind on the new front.
Viewed from the perspective of the traditional version, Lightroom 5 may be considered a huge missed opportunity. It underutilizes the power of Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and the internal SSD for the Adobe Bridge module as well as the entire user application. Lightroom 5 doesn’t even take advantage of the “Photoshop Elements aesthetics” being pushed to the Mac by competitor upstarts Photo Mechanic9 and Paintshop Pro X, both of which use a sleek, very Mac-like UI. That’s a big missed opportunity for Lightroom, especially as recent versions of Lightroom and Elements have shifted towards skeuomorphism – the usage of aesthetically pleasing and visually appealing design themes from the early days of computing.
Adobe Creative Cloud, the current incarnation of the Creative Suite, has “Photoshop Elements” in its name. This point is important, particularly in the new world of Apple desktop computers with optical drives, where it can be difficult to upgrade a version of Photoshop, even as old as CS2, to a later version. In order to do so, a hard disk is required.
Performance in Lightroom 5 is great. It could be better, since the internal SSD is only 256GB. Lightroom 5 supports RAW files that are shot with the latest generation’s Fujicamera X-Trans RAW format. Unfortunately, there was another significant omission: Adobe still does not support Microsoft Windows Azure Blob Storage. This means that once you shoot your RAW files, they are trapped in the cloud, making it impossible to use Lightroom on any PC besides that where Lightroom 5 is installed.
Adobe Photoshop now allows you to access the original raw files, gamma, and other data from the camera that can be loaded straight into the Photoshop Editor and immediately applied to any image and create magical photo effects. We’re also excited to announce the introduction of seamless drop shadows, in the form of Warp Shadows. They allow you to texture your items in the Photoshop Editor, and have them automatically drop seamlessly across the image for a completely seamless look, as well as their ability to be edited using Photoshop Gradients and Patterns. Experiment and adjust the amount of distortion and texture you want on your shadows. We’ll also be adding the ability to create drop shadows, which currently requires Lightroom, so that you can customize them directly in Photoshop. Try them out and let us know what you think!

Share for Review is the first major update to Adobe Photoshop since Adobe launched its Creative Cloud membership program in 2015. When using Share for Review, any changes made to a document are synchronized to co-workers’ desktops and shared online. Alternatively, if your colleagues are not online or choose not to collaborate, the edits you make to Photoshop will be stored locally for you to access and modify offline. Share for Review is available in the Photoshop Creative Cloud desktop app (in beta) and Photoshop CC software for Windows, Mac and Apple iOS.
“We’re committed to making Photoshop as approachable as possible so more people can use it and turn their ideas into reality. Share for Review is our way of making it easier for you to make edits in Photoshop,” said Adobe Photoshop expert Lee Brimelow.
Adopting the Share for Review feature is as simple as selecting the “Share for Review” command from the Review menu in Photoshop. When you’re ready to share, click the Share button. Your colleagues will then receive an invitation to confirm the changes you made, select the new state of the document and review them.
In addition to sharing changes alone, you’re also able to quickly share projects through the File ⌘ U menu. When you’re done sharing, Click Discard and the changes to the document will be discarded.
Share for Review also makes it possible for users to edit HTML files hosted on SharePoint without having to install additional software. Users can create HTML 5 files directly from Photoshop and, if Share for Review is installed on the consumer version of the desktop application, they’ll be automatically sent to SharePoint where they can be viewed with the built-in Web portal.
