In the prior art, the power supply of a pulse width modulated (PWM) generator is regulated to provide a minimum D.C. supply voltage during a portion of the “ON” period of the PWM generator. Typically, the D.C. supply voltage is greater than the minimum. The PWM generator is able to switch on and off rapidly with the low and high limits of the supply voltage, respectively. Because the duty cycle of the PWM generator is relatively high, the average power being delivered by the PWM generator is high.
When switching elements are used in the regulation path of the D.C. supply voltage, the output voltage may go so far below the minimum D.C. supply voltage that the switching elements have insufficient voltage to turn off properly.
FIG. 1 shows a prior art embodiment of a PWM generator 10 wherein the regulation path includes a high voltage diode 14 connected in series with one end of a second transistor 12 and connected to the output terminal 16 of the PWM generator 10 to provide the D.C. supply voltage from the output of the PWM generator 10. The source 17 of the transistor 12 is connected to a ground 18. The output terminal 16 of the PWM generator 10 is connected to the other end of the transistor 12 to provide an output voltage for driving a load 20.
