Serum free thyroxine (FT4) was found to be depressed in the rabbits at all stages of the infection. Levothyroxine (LT4) given in drinking water induced a reduction of FT4 in the rabbits when they were infected with the tat strain for as long as 23 days. The reduction was not associated with a decrease in brain tat titers, nor was it influenced by the presence of LT4 in the drinking water. Earlier and shorter application of LT4 decreased the tat titers in the brain. The effect on the FT4 values was greater in LT4-treated rabbits than in controls. The data support the suggestion of Okura et al. [1985, Neurol. 14, 277] that the peripheral action of thyroxine on the brain may involve central mechanisms.In vitro effects of air pollution on phagocytosis of streptococci by human polymorphonuclear leukocytes.
