The following is an extremely unfortunate example of where the reluctance or outright inability to deal with the problem of one individual can be manifested into the problem of large scale. The incident in question is probably not a big deal in and of itself, but if you bother to use your brain it should be clear that it is emblematic of much larger problems. Suffice to say that in the case of one individual and one organization, just a little bit of extra effort to deal with the problem can have enormous financial consequences for all of us.

Fauquier County in Virginia apparently became a staging ground for the manufacturing and distribution of heroin to various locations in the entire country. According to court documents, 300,000 bags of heroin were removed from a stash house in the county. That may not sound like a lot, but in one of the bags were found over 300 grams of a combination of powders that could be used to make 2.5 kilograms of heroin. Eight suspects are being held and if you’re wondering why this occurred, its because there has been some difficulty in addressing the problem of the local drug trade and in particular, the infiltration of foreign nationals into the problem. The local authorities just aren’t that concerned about these things because the incentives are to the contrary.

The result is the beginning of the third phase of the war on drugs. Historically when the government has focused on one perceived problem it has too often result in the manufacturing and distribution of other illicit substances. The result is the increase in demand in and of itself, which then creates its own new market. There are a lot of people out there who think that it would be a good idea to use the resources of the federal government to resolve this sort of problem, so they propose an idea to make it happen.
