With each passing week, people are asking more questions and the quality and effectiveness of a retailer’s answers are coming into focus as traditional marketing tactics disappear with online shopping. What is a retailer to do? And why hasn’t a national retail strategy been formulated yet? Pulse Opinion Research had a team of local market researchers create a survey recently to help retailers and the public to have a sense of what consumers expect from a retailer today. Our research project for retailers, which included the 76 San Francisco Bay Area retail markets, produced the following results: On pricing and value: – The majority of consumers believe it is most important for a retailer to provide value in its products. – Only about one-quarter of consumers think an important factor is price. – Quality is a growing issue for consumers. – Consumers are more likely to be concerned about a retailer’s willingness to innovate its products and services as compared to its ability to deliver the value consumers expect. On services: – Online shopping is fairly new and we anticipate that, as consumers increasingly use it, the services retailers provide will be just as important to consumers as the products themselves. – Increased participation by consumers in a retailer’s customer service will be critical to consumers’ satisfaction and loyalty. – For the first time this decade, consumers are primarily shopping online for their physical good needs rather than physical good needs. On marketing: – Consumers, now that they are more comfortable with online purchases, are asking for better security. – Consumers have reduced advertising purchases. – More than one-
