I just fell back into something that I took for granted but was really important to me: running. I haven’t been running long—less than a year. I used to run. It’s like a part of me has slouched off. In my mind, I was planning on running my first (motor) half-marathon in October. Unfortunately, a knee injury postponed that plan and when my knee healed, it was just a matter of taking the final steps to training for the Boston Marathon. Now I am training.

Unfamiliar territory? Not for these city-dwellers, who think that running is just another form of transportation. Turns out, it’s a lot like a car.

When do you run? It’s Monday, every Monday.

How long do you run? I’m running a maximum of five miles, every day, for the next two and a half months.

How fast do you run? I am going to have a daily 10-minute goal, but I am trying to run at a pace that is somewhere between a 10K and a marathon.

What do you wear? I haven’t looked at the weather too much. I’m mostly relying on instinct and a few layers. I want to learn to handle the cold, like I could handle the heat.

How long have you been running? About one month.

What has been your longest run? About three miles.

What has been your shortest run? I ran two miles. I ran up to a high school in Washington, DC, and back down to Tod’s Point. I asked the bus driver to let me ride the bus for free to make up for it.

How is running different from other forms of exercise? I’m not sure I think that running is the only form of exercise out there. It’s just the one I do know the best. The rest are new to me. What I don’t like is that the best part—getting to the finish line—isn’t as easy to quantify as something like weight lifting.
