Road vehicles
Road vehicles are designed to move people and goods on land. Vehicle manufacturers build trucks, cars, taxis, minibuses, pickup trucks, passenger vans, passenger cars, vans, buses, trucks, taxis, electric cars, limousines, etc. Such vehicles can use either internal combustion or electric propulsion. Most fuel-powered vehicles burn fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel. Modern internal-combustion engines use a small, but expanding, fraction of the energy they take in to produce work, so that electricity is more usually used to run electric motors. In buses and most large trucks or cars, diesel engines are common; in fact, the majority of internal combustion engine cars are powered by diesel engines. Internal combustion engines are also used in many light commercial vehicles. Fuel for power generation and other purposes is usually derived from naturally occurring substances like coal, natural gas, or petroleum, collectively known as fossil fuel.
For most early automotive applications, gasoline was the preferred fuel, though early production vehicles ran on anything from carburetted natural gas to compressed hydrogen gas. In the early 20th century, the internal combustion engine came into its own, with chainsaw-like lawnmower engines to power lawnmowers, submarines, tankers, and assorted other equipment. Powered by gasoline, the internal combustion engine’s many applications saw it displace horses in many common activities.
In the 20th century, internal combustion engines came into widespread use in automotive applications, by replacing steam and electric power. After World War II, most automotive fuel was petroleum derived from oil wells, and steam engines, electric motors and hydraulics were largely replaced by internal combustion engines. However, most electric motors were not suitable for high-speed automobiles, and some competing efforts used solar power for vehicles. In contrast to electric and steam power, internal combustion engines are relatively easily modified and provide different power, torque, and speeds depending on the application. The internal combustion engine is also an easily understood and tested technology.
