History
The history of AutoCAD dates back to the late 1970s and 1980s. These drawings were drawn by hand on sheets of paper and then pasted on to a drafting board to make a drawing. A typical drafting board can hold a number of sheets and is as tall as a person is tall. Such a board can be easily broken. Therefore, the drafting board was frequently used only for drawing on drawings that would remain the same size.
In 1972, Charles Simonyi, an electrical engineer, founded Unicon Corporation in the small town of Elsah, Illinois. Simonyi’s idea was to create a pen-based drawing system that would be portable and inexpensive. With the help of a number of engineers and programmers who worked at Unicon, Simonyi developed a drafting system called Gypsy. The system was very successful, but the price tag of $500 meant that only a few people could afford it. After Simonyi left Unicon in 1975 to form his own company, Unicon was sold to an Austrian company called Sauerländer. In 1979, the Sauerländer group sold Unicon to a German company called Magyar Eretzség Opella-történeti Művei, or MEOP.
