in the new document dialog box, under the save option, you have the choice to save your work in a new illustrator document. there is one exception to this : you don't get this option if you open your document from an earlier version (as opposed to saving a document from the scratch).

resolution of the canvas is a factor in the appearance of the image while tracing. the older the resolution, the better the result. the higher the number, the better the quality of the picture. this part of the tutorial is kind of an introduction to the world of illustrator. i recommend starting on version 3.0.0 of the application and then going through the tutorials. the tutorials do a very good job of explaining how to use illustrator.
