Lightroom 5 is not the first version of Lightroom to have a feature that’s been catching on with users, but it’s others that have been added in recent versions that will be most welcome. One of the best features of Lightroom 5 is the ability to bring in images from Apple’s Photos app.
In the end, it’s not Photoshop’s performance that pushes me to write this article. It’s a treat to see how the interface has evolved, to find out what new features have been added, or to discover new capabilities, such as the new direct access to the RAW files. It’s software’s flexibility that really makes me enthusiastic here. Of course, handling the vast amount of data you store in Photoshop becomes problematic when you do not have an SSD in your computer and 32GB is not enough. And the older – but still popular – Photoshop workflow is no longer the most beneficial either. The new Auto-backup feature is certainly welcome, but I believe that there is much that is still missing, which could be integrated in the OS or in a plugin.
Photoshop is a professional photo editing package. The Adobe family of products includes Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. For me, Photoshop is ideal for photo manipulation such as basic editing, composite images, etc. For weekly photo shoots I use Lightroom instead. For one-time projects or modifications to existing images, I’d create a new document in Photoshop and copy and paste images. Another disadvantage of using PS for one-time or short-lived projects is the lack of a RAW format option.
Unlike Photoshop, Lightroom is free software for photo editing and RAW format options. Lightroom is compatible with both Windows and Mac. I usually use it for all of my photo editing. It has more editing functions than Photoshop for photo manipulation. You also get a RAW file option as opposed to the lack of one in Photoshop. Still, if you’re not a Lightroom user, there are still ways to use Photoshop even if you don’t have a Creative Cloud subscription.
For more experienced photographers, a final round of edits could be made by using the older Photoshop CS5 Extended + lightroom workflow. You can use Lightroom for many of the functions, but it has no RAW format option. Continue to use Adobe Photoshop for image composition as well as for editing, compositing, and RAW image editing for an overall more professional look.
