Helix is the first product in the AIX system software to be released as Helix Update, and it is the first version of Helix to use 32-bit code instead of 16-bit code. Although the 32-bit version of Helix Update is available, only the 64-bit version of Helix Update is available. This is because the 32-bit Helix Update is only available for use on computers that have 64-bit CPUs. Since only 64-bit software can run on 64-bit CPUs, 32-bit Helix Update is only available for use on older-style computers that have 64-bit CPUs.
This new feature allows users to open up their images in an Slicer-like image browser, choosing images from this image browser, and applying one custom or predefined style to the photos — as well as choosing edits that range from changing the shadows to the highlights, or re-flattening the image. With the image browser open, images can be cropped, moved, rotated, and even modified in Photoshop’s new content-aware fill feature. Simply drag the selection area around the area of interest until a preview appears. We had a good time with the modeling and drawing tools in Photoshop, though we recommend staying clear of the pernicious ‘PhotoMatch’ tool.

I have been a photographer since before cameras actually worked, and have been using and writing about PhotoShop for about 20 years. Photoshop CC is the first edition of PhotoShop I’ve seen that actually uses the great features in LR as a starting point. In fact, the best part of working with the new app is the seamless pipeline with LR.
Using photographers own images it is easy to see how a lot of the new features work. Photoshop and the new version of LR work nicely together. Photoshop lets you move on to doing your own work and concentrate on that. At the same time, Adobe has still kept all those classic functions that photographers love. I find myself more and more resorting to Photoshop’s volume control when doing to web photo work. This is a welcome update – I’ll be updating my video work as well.
