I start to give him a whirlwind summary of politics and a weather forecast (it’s cloudy and windy) but he cuts me off to ask: “How was it? Was it you or the Irish?”
It was you, I tell him.
Everyone is shocked when I confess that I am an Irish emigrant who spent the last couple of years living here. I’ve been living in a country called Ireland, and that’s about as far as I got, despite the fact that I’ve been here for close to two decades.

We didn’t see the bombs as much as we heard them. “We could hear them coming,” my wife Rosaleen said. “The air was full of cinders and dirt.”
