the soundtrack to this film is a collection of jr. high school musical favorites that blend together like a big old, nasty, fun, candy machine. the song choices are very elementary, but the ‘flavor’ of a particular musical style is really the determining factor here. of course, a big dose of nerd/romanticism is also involved. the songs come in 4 general categories: pop, rock, steelpan, and symphonic. the pop songs include a few numbers from little hearts, a very bland group not too dissimilar from dallas. the only real pop group they use in the film is misty monday, whose song is used during the opening credits. some songs do not belong in the film at all. such is certainly the case with the steelpan songs. the symphonic music is excellent, but it does not seem to belong and is probably still not used in the actual movie. the rock songs are not as good, but they fit the atmosphere of the film and would be good to have in any collection. the steelpan songs here are some of the most boring ones that i have ever heard. they go nowhere, and are a bit crude in their execution. if you are a steelpan fan, stick to the other albums which are far better. one steelpan tune that is used a few times and seems to appear at the end of the song is called ‘the grand finale.’ it is a mediocre piece, and i have never liked it. the rock songs are much better than the steelpan stuff. ‘the wizard’ and ‘let us live’ are stronger songs than most people realize. i know ‘all about it’ and ‘the hustle’ are big hits. as far as i am concerned, they should be released. the songs are sung in english, not dutch. this is fine with me because i think english is more correct than dutch. the group hully gee seems to have only released one song on the soundtrack. the rest of the song selections are supplied by the mtv club, the tumbalaka tribe, and the ‘tony and 24′ group. the mtv club contribution is’sweet fantasy.’ this group is like a cross between the ‘tale of the castle’ and the ‘britney spears’ girl group. i do not think that they did anything else very well, but they are a good band and i like that song.
