The colored woodpecker (Picus viridis) is a smallish woodpecker that lives in tropical and subtropical Americas in the wild. It is classified in the family Picidae, and its genus is “Picus”. It is sometimes placed in its own subfamily, Ficinae, but this is not accepted by all scientists. It shares some similarities in anatomy with the the pygmy woodpecker (Picus pygmaeus). It has been used as a model organism for a number of studies of ecological adaptation to a human-dominated environment. The Montevideo woodspecker (Picus carolinensis), also known as the Carolina or red-bellied woodpecker, is a medium-sized woodpecker of eastern North America. It is one of the three species in the genus Picus, the others being the common or European woodpecker (P. erythrophthalmus) and the hairy woodpecker (P. hirsutus). This species is the only woodpecker that is an agricultural pest. Its diet consists of tree sap, bark, grain, and suet. It is an omnivorous bird. It is a heavy-bodied bird, with a short, powerful beak, and a short tail. It is 23–25 centimetres (9–9.8 inches) long, usually weighs about 1.5-2 kg (3.3-4.8 pounds), and measures 31–39 cm (12–15 in) long including the tail. The female has a much duller plumage than the male. The male and female have different plumage, generally black and white, respectively. The red-bellied woodpecker is mostly nocturnal, and usually forages in the woods but can also be found in second-growth forests and gardens. They nest in trees, and the nest structure is sometimes rotten wood in living trees, a nest that is burrowed into a living tree is called a termite nest, and sometimes can be found on the ground, called a ground nest. The red-bellied woodpecker has one of the longest lifespans of all birds, at an age of up to 30 years. Like other woodpeckers, the woodpecker’s feet have strong hooks that can shred wood to obtain the sap. Their feet are used in the production of soft leather for use as shoe soles.
