In March, New York State passed its “Opt-out bill” granting civil marriages to same-sex couples. Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, Washington, D.C., and the District of Columbia have also decided to let same-sex couples register for civil marriage licenses. The June issue of The New York Times Magazine profile Savage and his partner, Terry Miller, showing how they, along with other gay couples in the state, have created a civil union system for themselves.
The magazine’s editors called the results a “historic moment,” and promised, “Dan is going to be there, holding our hands, as the most powerful person in the land.”
Savage laughed. “No!” he said. “No, I don’t want that. No, I don’t want to be the most powerful person in the land. It’s a job I can’t do. That’s not my job. If I did my job right, I’d be a citizen who works for the benefit of the country.”
Savage, who is also an editor of the magazine, is quick to point out that his own marriage—to Terry Miller—is of no legal meaning. “I’m not married to Terry, but I love her. I’m sure that’s the way my relationship with the president of the United States is. As I understand it, I’m not the president.”
The couple are parents to five children, three of whom live at home, with the fourth and fifth at college. “How do I have a traditional family life?” he asked. “I have a very traditional life. I’m just not married to my wife. I’m not married to anybody. I’m not married to the republic. So that’s how I’d like to be described.”
By our lights, the most powerful person in the land would be likely to be someone like Oprah Winfrey, a man who has been criticized because he is not married. Or perhaps the spouse of the president of the United States. As we’ve written before, we don’t judge. But we judge Savage.
