For CG, the subjects were required to repeatedly learn the teaching of graduate English and other EBL words and their definitions from English textbook or EBL textbook. They were required to repeat the contents of English textbook or EBL textbook 15 times by the time they entered the second semester.

For EG, the teaching materials were deployed based on the KWL plus model of metacognitive strategy instruction. The teaching being reexamined and improved regularly according to a fixed-sequence. First, the subjects were taught how to learn the words and their significant meanings in English by theory. Next, students studied and mastered of the words and their definitions by practice.

At the beginning of the second semester, the subjects were required to complete the CET4 and the research test of the first part of this study. After completing the 18-week instruction, the subjects were required to complete the research test in order to assess the effectiveness of the instruction. The test was employed in the subject. There were 4 questions per question group, 15 questions in total. The questions and their answers are in Appendix 2. There were 2 parts of the research question, namely the after-test and the comparative tests, which were the most important parts in the research. In the after-test, the subjects were required to complete the exam required by the first part of this study. After the completion of the test, the subjects were required to complete the comparative test, in which there were 3 question groups, namely the question group in which the word had replaced by the word borned in the recited by the teacher, the question group in which the word was changed into the one not in the recited by the teacher as the correct answer and the last group. In the comparative tests, all the 81 subjects took the test, but only the answer rate and the correct answer rate in the EG were extracted from the data of the test. The average score in the two parts of the research test was the final score of each group.
