As befitting a Drumazon exclusive, Nepheton has an extensive list of inbuilt presets – there are 200 of them – which are designed to cover every mood, genre and part of the ‘human’ spectrum. Inside the VR43 envelope can be found everything from the classic 808 sounds of the 80s right up to the gritty, funky sounds of the early 2000s, and the programmers have done a fine job of capturing that real Edna vibe that may not be possible to replicate with samples.

The preset scene is brought to life with a rich sound palette that will take your imagination on a trip to that happy place known as the mid-line. To the right are the standard analog sounds – 808, 909, TR-808 and TR-909 – of course, and then you have the quieter pads, basses, high hats and snares. But that´s not all! With a quick flick of the mouse you´ll find the Koren-Brings and Koren-Brush presets, a few Sabian cymbals and a range of cajon drums with which to construct the right atmospheric sound for any occasion. All the major groups are available, too, alongside Redrum, Korg and Korg Wavestation II Legends. In version 0.6, things have been updated and extended with new Ripple Pad and Disco Zone function presets, new presets based on the new Emulator X platform, and some tweaked presets to take account of the latest changes in Drumazon. The updates go perfectly with the addition of sound banks for slapped and thrashed 808s, and the upgraded Sampler (and many other tweaks).

Nepheton comes in three flavours: Native Instruments, VST or AU (stand-alone) and comes with a choice of two sample rates: 44.1kHz and 48kHz. A 48kHz sample rate is what you´d want for maximum resolution and clarity as it will enable tempo syncing from Drumazon, for example, in most other emulations that have host-controlled rates, 44.1kHz is the traditional industry standard.

We found the absurdly high pad tone and snappy punch to be very annoying, but the over-the-top synth lines hooked us right away. The drums are very authentic, of course, and their way of working is delightfully King Kong-like. Don´t miss out on this one. Did we mention that it´s only €4.99 once again? That dead-simple pricing is a real schlep. So is the limited availability – which means only a few months before the price will drop even lower.
