Field of the Invention This invention relates to downhole safety valves and, more particularly, to an apparatus and method for locating downhole safety valves. 2. Description of the Related Art Hydrocarbon wells, such as oil, gas and geothermal wells, are typically completed with a metal or composite (e.g., sand) string which extends from the surface to a selected depth in the well. The string is often referred to as tubing. A downhole safety valve assembly is disposed in the tubing. The safety valve assembly is opened or closed to prevent undesired fluid from flowing from the tubing to the formation and/or from the formation into the tubing. Surface safety valves are run on the tubing string at predetermined depths in the well and include a sliding gate or flapper which may be actuated to cover a flow path of the valve. An opening running to the surface is formed in the tubing string and may be accessed at the surface by closing the flapper or sliding the gate against a seat. Primary safety valves or subsurface safety valves typically include a closed or floating ball which may be dropped or pumped to the bottom of the tubing to block the flow of fluid. As used herein, subsurface safety valves are those valves disposed below the surface of the well. A downhole safety valve may be used to shut in undesired fluid flows in the event of a problem or emergency, such as, for example, during a blowout or at the conclusion of production of a hydrocarbon well. The downhole safety valve may also be closed to prevent well fluids from leaving an underground zone and entering the tubing string at the surface. An exemplary downhole safety valve is described in U.S. Pat. No. 6,813,120, which is incorporated herein by reference.
