Harry Potter Series 1080p Dual Audiol
Released on Blu-ray for the first time, this saga of magical beings comes to Blu-ray in a special edition collection. The extras on the set are truly special, starting with the Harry Potter Blu-ray/DVD combo. That feature-packed disc includes two separate discs, one of which is a “commentary” featuring director David Yates and producer David Heyman. The second disc, dubbed the “Expanded Features” disc, is split down the middle, with four featurettes included on one side and four deleted scenes on the other. Warner’s “super deluxe edition” package includes an 80-page art book, and more than 20 hours of extras, including a second commentary track with director Yates and producer Heyman.
A sequel to the popular “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” this installment continues in the same sense that “Chamber of Secrets” lagged behind the early films of the series in terms of visual design. However, that doesn’t matter much for the characters and the story, and director Chris Columbus actually shines in “Goblet of Fire.” If you can’t stand the sight of Harry and his pals doing magic, you may find the darker tone of this final book a bit daunting. At the same time, the characters are more fully developed here, and the setting is more richly detailed than before. The film’s open ending also was the first to be ambiguous, and with the chance to follow the characters further into their adult lives, it’s a welcome chance to revisit a favorite franchise.
If you like what you see in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” you’ll find the next four books filled with the same level of imagination and action. Characterization, story, and atmosphere is taken to new heights here, and, without getting too judgmental, “Order of the Phoenix” is easily the best of the series. It also comes with the added bonus of Chris Columbus taking his talent to the big screen for the first time, in the acclaimed “Hook” (don’t miss his cameo in the climactic battle of “Hogwarts”). Once again, however, the DVD lacks a true reference-quality transfer, and the lushly composed score doesn’t do much to compensate for that.
