He was also well-versed in poetry and literature. He travelled to many countries, such as Syria, Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan, to meet with renowned Sufi masters and learn from them. Some of his teachers were Abu al-Fadl Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Khuttali, Abu Bakr al-Warraq, Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Qassab, and Abu al-Fazl al-Maydumi. He also visited the tombs of famous Sufi saints, such as Bayazid Bastami, Junayd Baghdadi, Mansur Hallaj, and Abdul Qadir Jilani.

He settled in Lahore, Pakistan, where he preached Islam and Sufism to the masses. He also wrote several books on various aspects of Sufism, such as theology, ethics, mysticism, jurisprudence, and poetry. His most famous work is Kashf al-Mahjub (The Unveiling of the Hidden), which he wrote in Persian. It is a comprehensive and systematic exposition of Sufi doctrine and practice based on the Quran, the Sunnah, and the sayings and experiences of the Sufi masters. It covers topics such as the definition and origin of Sufism, the stages and states of the spiritual path, the qualities and duties of the Sufi seekers and guides, the rules and etiquette of Sufi conduct and worship, the miracles and wonders of the Sufi saints, and the controversies and criticisms surrounding Sufism. Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh passed away in Lahore around 1072 AD. He was buried near his mosque on the outskirts of the city. His tomb soon became a place of pilgrimage for his devotees and admirers who believed that he had spiritual powers and could grant their wishes. His tomb was later expanded and beautified by various rulers and dynasties over the centuries. The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb demolished his tomb in 1674 but later rebuilt it in 1676. The shrine complex was further enlarged and renovated by various governments and organizations in the 20th and 21st centuries. It is now one of the largest and most visited shrines in Pakistan. It also houses a mosque, a library, a museum, a madrasa, a police station, a car park, and other facilities. Every year, millions of people visit his shrine to pay their respects and seek his blessings. His death anniversary (urs) is celebrated with great fervor and devotion every year.
