This study will be randomized and conducted in China. The treatments will be performed as drug-free acupuncture by two licensed acupuncturists. The acupuncturists will have received standard training approved by the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China. These acupuncturists are certified by the Chinese Association of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, are approved by the World Association for Acupuncture and Moxibustion, and are fully aware of the importance of blinded studies. Participants in the study will be treated at three acupuncturists` centers randomly allocated to, two, three, or four acupuncturists to perform acupuncture treatment. The acupuncturists will be randomly assigned to the intervention group or the control group according to baseline IOP measurement.

During the intervention, we will measure participants` IOP at baseline, and determine whether participants` treatments are effective. The effectiveness of treatment will be reported by the percentage of participants, who achieve the primary outcome at 6 months after baseline IOP measurement. The results will be analyzed using Fisher’s exact test. The 95% confidence interval (CI) will be determined for the percentage of participants who achieve the primary outcome. If the CI falls within the range of 30%~70% (i.e. 1/3~2/3), we will infer that acupuncture treatment is not effective at this dose. The safety of treatment will be assessed by the number of adverse events.

Tong Quan consists of sixty-four points, most of which were already discovered by scholars from ancient times. They are arranged based on their anatomical location. Because of their counterpart relationship between essential organs and meridians, their influence and therapeutic effect are the same. This book demonstrates each point with illustrations, as well as making it available in simplified Chinese.

Master Tung’s acupuncture system is a combination of traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine. According to the book Handbook on Practical Acupuncture (1983), “Tung made the following interesting comments as far as general principles: 1) The functional vascular system should be supported and regulated; 2) there should be a continual benefit without pain; 3) the patient should feel comfortable during treatment; 4) the patient should not be able to predict the treatment as it should work only when the disease becomes acute or reaches the peak.”1
