Whole Foods, an acquisition target for rivals in recent years, is now Richmond’s biggest financial institution.

The grocery store chain said Tuesday that it has become the tenant of the new 400,000-square-foot building at Monument Avenue that was previously home to Jefferson-Pilot Bank.

The new branch, to be called Whole Foods Montgomery, is scheduled to open in late spring, said Joe Skirvin, a spokesman for the area’s largest grocery store chain.

Similar to its counterparts, the new branch in Richmond is to stock full shelves of groceries and non-food items as well as a few restaurants. Skirvin said there are no other specifics about the new branch at this time.

In recent years, Whole Foods has completed several notable moves, including a purchase of the Safeway supermarket chain and its nine Virginia stores earlier this year.

The largest of those Safeways, with about 50 employees, is in Hermitage, south of Richmond. The grocery store chain is set to close the Hermitage store on March 30, said a spokesperson, which is not yet known if the 52 employees will be offered positions at a neighboring store, a Richmond location, or at one of the stores in the other sites that Safeway owns in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Safeway will continue to be open with service and management of the Food Fair location in Hanover County, which also has about 50 employees.

Jefferson-Pilot Bank in Richmond is the nation’s largest financial institution with branches across the Mid-Atlantic region.

The national bank has locations in Pikesville, Maryland, and Emporia, Kansas. In 2016, Jefferson-Pilot was bought by the Wells Fargo bank.

At its new location, which just got a new sign outside, the branch will have a drive-thru and a self-service check-writing kiosk that can be used by customers without a bank account.

The new branch will have a cashier-led check cashing service, and bank tellers are available as needed.
