The new intervention, known as ketamine or “K,” has been shown to be effective even for the most severe cases of delirium, and it is the first FDA-approved treatment for this condition.

Ketamine has been used in the ICU for years to treat patients who have severe psychiatric symptoms and those with intractable agitation and hallucinations. According to the ICU-Day website, over 4 million Americans with mental illness are treated in the ICU annually, and about 4.5 million people visit emergency rooms each year as a result of mental health-related issues. Individuals with mental health issues are also six times more likely to die in the hospital than those without such conditions.

The most common symptoms of delirium include an inattentive, hyperactive, or confused state. It can be provoked by a variety of conditions, such as chronic illness, advanced age, prolonged critical illness, and metabolic derangements. But the most concerning complication of delirium is that it can lead to death.
