Q:
Confusion with *expression-list* construct
I’m writing a grammar to determine whether a string is a validly-formatted list of numbers. I’ve got a handful of expression-list constructs that help to do this, including:
expression-list ::= *expression* ( expression-list )* ;
This works fine if I have something like (2,3,4), it understands it to mean ((2,3,4)). But I also have some constructs that look like:
expression-list ::= ( expression ( expression-list ))
And in these cases, it doesn’t seem to see ((2,3,4)) as valid. What I want is that expression-list to only match a list of expressions, and not an expression of a list of expressions. But I’m not sure what to do, and looking at the LL(1) algorithm, I can’t find anything that will help.
A:
The grammar you posted isn’t ambiguous. “Expression-list” is not a Grammar Rule. It is a terminal production.
To make your rule unambiguous, put parentheses around the sub-expression.
expression-list ::= *expression* (expression-list)* ;
The language can tell the difference between expression (expression-list) and (expression (expression-list) if expression-list is non-terminal; otherwise, it couldn’t tell the difference between 2+2 and 2 + (2+2), so in your case it wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between expression ((expression (expression-list))) and expression (((expression (expression-list)))) because both are unambiguous.
Kolkata: Bihar’s newest Congress MP from Begusarai district on Sunday on Friday said there were no forces within the country to ensure India-China border was an obstacle.
“There are no forces in the country to ensure India-China border is an obstacle. Nobody is thinking to keep it as an obstacle. We should think about India’s prosperity,” he told reporters.
“There are some problems on India-Pakistan border but there are no problems on India-China border,” he added.
Asked whether he got any support from BJP and Trinamool Congress for his joining of Congress, he told reporters that nobody should link him with parties. “Any https://wakelet.com/wake/c5fREbRL-vD86P0p_IsEm
