I have come to be aware of PTHC over the past few years as the conference has grown. I first heard about it when I attended the 2007 Transgender Health Summit in Baltimore, where it was presented at a similar conference I went to. I remember liking the idea at the time, but I only fully grasped it’s meaning and complexity when I returned to it last year. Overall, coming to the 2nd PTHC was great because I got to meet a lot of people, talk to them, and hear their ideas.
When I made the transition to my current gender back in 2007, I spent the next few years trying to figure out what I would call myself. I mainly called myself female because I felt comfortable and it was the easiest to say. But I was constantly worrying about how other people would react to my body, my clothes, and what I did. So I started looking for ways to connect to other folks after I transitioned.
After the 2007 Transgender Health Summit, I decided to work on building a conference format that would address all of the needs that Chicago trans* people have. For instance, I came across some amazing literature about the term “transsexual” and began to use the word “transgender” instead. However, I would still use the word transsexual to describe myself because I wanted to be involved as much as possible. I also really liked the idea of a more positive and affirming word to use for myself and my community, so I decided to translate the German word “Transgenderkonferenz” into the English language.
My first PTHC was part of a Boston-area transgender gathering at the Boston Center of Transgender Health. My uncle Chris took me out of the airport and we went straight to the gathering, where I found many brilliant people.
