SharePoint forms based authentication is a mechanism for restricting access to SharePoint sites based on a user’s identity. The Forms Based Authentication Settings are configured in Central Administration, but there is no easy way to manage it, in fact no UI at all. So you end up using the SharePoint 2010 standard “Membership” and “Role” controls to manage the users and groups. If you don’t stick with the managed settings, you have to do your own enforcement of the restrictions, as SharePoint will not use the more powerful Windows-based authentication features in Server 2008. Forms Based Authentication (FBA) allows you to implement a mechanism for restricting access to SharePoint sites based on a user’s identity. It uses a Web Forms server (w3wp.exe) in the background that runs one or more web applications. Each web application implements the forms based authentication, and uses a default forms based authentication page to be presented to users. It provides a new and better implementation of SharePoint forms based authentication (FBA) and is based on the architecture of the new SharePoint 2010 Intranet / Extranet Site Feature. SharePoint 2010 Forms Based Authentication is an OAuth compatible, claims based authentication system. It stores users and their claims in the Microsoft Distributed Cache and makes them available to other SharePoint applications. It provides a simple interface for users to log in and control their account with a username and password or by using their OAuth credentials. It provides a set of webparts and a management console that makes working with forms based authentication a little easier. The CKS for SP2010 FBA Pack allows you to securely manage OAuth authentication in a custom authentication workflow, which can be used to restrict access to SharePoint to specific groups of users. You can also provide a sample of the user’s claims for display on the sign-in page. SharePoint 2010 FBA Pack Components: Samples Login / Register Web Part The Login / Register web part allows a user to sign in to SharePoint with OAuth. If a user successfully logs in they are redirected to a page with a login form to enter their credentials. If the user has configured their login URL to use an OAuth Consumer (Login URL OAuth Consumer), and this OAuth Consumer is registered with the solution, the consumer will be displayed on the login form. The Login / Register web part also adds an OAuth Provider claim to the user’s claims. Sample Login Sample Register Change Password Web Part The Change Password web part allows a user to change their own password. If a user successfully changes their password they are automatically logged in and redirected to the Change Password page. Sample Change Password Reset Password Web Part The Reset Password web part allows a user to reset their password in two different ways. If a user successfully resets their password they are automatically logged in and redirected to the Reset Password page. If a user resets their password by manually entering the reset code, they are asked to enter the Reset Code to be sent to them by email. When a user is reset their password the password is changed and an email is sent to the user. Sample Reset Password Custom User / Role Administration Web Part This web part displays lists of users and their claims and groups of users and their claims. Custom User / Role Administration Custom Registration Approvals Web Part The Custom Registration Approvals web part can be used to allow users to register for SharePoint. Use the FBA Pack to manage users, roles, groups, and groups of groups of users with a customized WebPart in a SharePoint 2010 environment. With the ability to customize the forms, forms field, and forms logon of a site or subsite, you can make that site easy for your users to use but only allow them access to parts of the site as needed. Users can sign in to those parts of the site with a username and password or after provisioning their credentials with the FBA Pack.
