Q:
Hard Drive before 120°F
I’ve recently had a couple of hard drives fail over the past year and a half or so. Always in the summer when the hard drives are exposed to direct sunlight. I am starting to think that they may just be a fluke and that I have a growing epidemic.
Anyway, the problem is that it is hard to tell if a hard drive is overheating if the ambient temperature is something like 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
I realize that things like the H-D bay fans and such increase the cooling for the drive, but with the fans they are also producing a lot of heat from themselves.
I really hope I am missing something obvious. Even if I was, then is there any advice on what I could do to protect my drives?
A:
The hard drive is probably the heat generating part of the computer – you’ll get a much better sense of how hot it gets if you plug it in and run a benchmark program such as Prime95 or Sandra. You’ll be able to accurately gauge the amount of heat coming off the drive, and then the relative cooling efficiency of your heat sink and fan. Here’s a good picture of how to attach the heat sink, too.
When ambient air temperature gets too high, it tends to be because there’s not enough cooling – your exhaust fan may not be operating at a high enough speed, or a fan might be at a high enough resistance.
It’s possible that these drives aren’t cooling quite well, but with high ambient temperatures, it’s probably more likely that they’re operating too fast. A faster CPU also uses more power, and therefore should be cooler when it’s operating than when it’s idle.
Edit – If your computer is air conditioned, that will help with the CPU cooling – though I would have to say that in a case in which the CPU will be positioned in a way that will be direct heat, putting the air conditioner on the drive itself might be a good way to keep the CPU cool.
Q:
Will deleting a disk from a USB enclosure change the contents of the original disk?
I have a few disks with data on them that I need to securely delete. They are NTFS formatted and reside on a USB enclosure. I am using Linux Mint and it appears that they reside in /dev/sdb1.
Is it possible to safely delete them without any effects
