Thread has default charset?
Set local and user’s message character set to the one in current message
Preferences | Set Message Character Set

Tl,dr:
The problem is not for Internet Explorer, but for Firefox. When you open a message from Thunderbird, it is automatically set to your system default browser charset. IE was designed with this functionality in mind, so the problem is not with IE but with Mozilla’s Webmail.

Maybe the feature is specific to Internet Explorer only, or maybe it will get updated in time. The article is from 2007.

I use Firefox and I don’t know whether you understand what you are talking about, but when you say that Mozilla’s Webmail (the webmail.live.com one) shows the message in the current charset, the user has control over it. I mean the user can change the charset of a message before sending it (sticking it), or after receiving it.

There’s no difference for the user in choosing the current browser default charset as they always do, it’s a feature designed to make it easier for people to read mail and it’s not specific to any browser (I tested the page on a different PC and it was set to GB, but I don’t think it’s browser specific).

Mozilla has long supported this feature in their Thunderbird mail client, however with all of the changes that they have made lately, I guess the compatibility was not tested with Thunderbird 1.0+. That is why they broke compatibility with older version of Thunderbird and introduced a new “message and encoding” sub-menu, to enable this function.

I never needed this feature, but I did understand what you were talking about, and I think you should be able to set it up on the default Webmail page that is now integrated with Thunderbird.

I think you are wrong on your interpretation of what he meant. he was stating that in most browsers you can switch to the character set of the current message via the browser’s menus. The Webmail client then does a very similar thing by displaying the content in the current character set.

Of course, what I said was that there was no problem with the Webmail page in terms of supporting this feature. You asked why it was not supported by any of the default browsers. The answer is that Firefox decided to break compatibility with older Thunderbird versions so now the webmail client’s support of the feature is limited.

What’s New In?

StickyCharset is a tool to keep the original charset of messages you send.
It checks the original charset of the message(s) and keeps the charset if it matches the one you sent.
This is useful if you send a message that has an erroneous charset and you want to keep your original charset and keep the message readable.
This project consists of two parts:
1. Provide a quick and easy way to do this, as an extension to Thunderbird.
2. Create an action in the Message List window so that you can do this quickly.
History:
v1.0
* Fixed a bug where charset mappings were saved to wrong place.
* Vignette fixed to match the new message list window.
v1.1
* Added an option in Options to open message list directly from the view.
* Thanks to Theo for the tip!

Use ‘Get Sources’ to go to the Files tab and browse.
TIP: Windows XP and earlier cannot use the ‘Get Sources’ and the ‘Choose-Actions’
options. These options are only available to users running Thunderbird on a
modern Windows platform (i.e. Windows 2000 or Windows XP).

Note:
The Get Sources and Choose-Actions buttons are on the toolbar
but the button will not be enabled unless the user has the ‘Search
as You Type’ service enabled.

A number of Firefox extensions have recently offered a range of tools
that allow you to manage and organise your contacts, and some of those
extensions include a good contacts manager tool. However, one of the
most important aspects of a contact manager is the ability to organise
those contacts into groups.

All the features of MozzContacts are available on Thunderbird,
although it isn’t a polished extension.

MozzContacts is a contacts manager for Thunderbird. With it you can:
* group your contacts into categories;
* group your conversations into topics;
* have the ability to attach a message to the contact who is
mentioned in that message;
* and import all your address books and groups to Thunderbird.

You can download the latest version of MozzContacts from:

The latest version of MozzContacts (as of May, 2008) can be installed
from either the Firefox extension directory (about:addons) or from the
Thunderbird extension directory (about:addons). The following instructions
will refer to the Mozilla extension directory.

When MozzContacts is installed, it adds a menu item to the Thunderbird
tools menu. Click on it and click on ‘Contacts’.

To add a contact:

* In the address book window, select a contact.
