in the battle of the pelennor fields, aragorn faced off against the witch-king of angmar. the witch-king was defeated, and aragorn, legolas, and gimli killed him. the fellowship’s true quest was the investigation of the barrow-downs, in order to discover the true identity of the heir of elrond, who was long thought to be aragorn. in the adventure of the barrow-downs, the fellowship encountered a cave-dwelling creature, who turned out to be none other than sauron himself, alive and well, and who had been brought back to middle-earth by the nine. aragorn and his forces defeated sauron’s army and pursued him to the cliffs of rauros. aragorn was mortally wounded during the assault on the cliffs, and was carried off by his friends and family. the next day, gimli was left to guard the barrow-downs, so that sauron could not find the ring. the ring was removed from gimli’s finger and dropped into a hole, but the doom of the world had now been set into motion. ^[25]

during the escape from minas tirith, boromir took aragorn’s place as the king’s heir. he was secretly killed by sauron’s servant, after he had betrayed the fellowship to the people of minas tirith. as the fellowship had no reason to be in mordor, the ring-bearer, frodo, decided to take it to rivendell in order to seek the help of elrond. but when he got there, he discovered that it had been taken to rivendell by gandalf the grey. while in rivendell, he learned of the existance of gollum, the former and loyal servant of sméagol, who had befriended bilbo baggins back in the shire. at first, the ringbearer was wary of the creature, whom he believed was corrupted by the one ring. when frodo learned that gollum possessed the ring, he attempted to take it back to the shire, but he and his companions were attacked by orcs. gollum accidentally broke the ring. frodo tried to put it back on, but he was too late. gollum was captured by sméagol and transformed into a ring-bearer of his own. before frodo was able to rescue gollum, sméagol had eaten the ring.^[26] the ringbearer, who had become separated from the group, returned to the shire, and found the ring on his finger. sméagol was sent to mordor by saruman to become sauron’s chief lieutenant. he was able to corrupt bilbo, and later bilbo’s two companions, frodo and sam.
