Although an American industry rock was a key part of the resurrection of American popular music after 1945, a few British performers of the period became successful in the States. These included Cliff Richard, whose first success was on the UK charts with “Living Doll”, in 1958, and the Kingston Trio, who had success in the mid-1960s with “Tom Dooley”. Other British acts that were popular in the US during the 1960s, including the Zombies, the Small Faces, the Who, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and the Animals (until their disbandment in 1970), had mixed success; many had much greater success on the British charts than the US.[89]

A late success story of the British Invasion was Mantovani, whose “music of beautiful people” music style in the 1960s enjoyed radio, dance club, and concert success in the United States. Mantovani had been commissioned by the BBC to perform a single late in 1960, which became a big hit. On its release in the US in 1962, Mantovani’s “Tonight I’ll Say Romance” peaked at #21 on the Billboard charts.[102] The song was enormously popular in Britain and was performed by many artists, including the Beatles, who paid a similar tribute to the theme in the Beatles’ song “She Loves You” from 1967.[102]

However, despite Mantovani, the Beatles, and the Beach Boys, rock and roll did not enjoy nearly the same popularity in America as it enjoyed in Britain; in the United States, rock and roll music was a term typically used by both black and white audiences to refer to the revitalization of American rhythm and blues music, particularly R&B/soul music in the mid-1950s to early 1960s.[89] Rock and roll, therefore, was not a commonly heard term in the American 1960s or early 1970s; it was used by those enthusiasts who promoted and created the music, and particularly American blacks, baseball players, musicians, dancers and aerobics enthusiasts (as well as lovers of American jazz and classical music).[89]
