By default, the layers are set so that they are grouped together, but if you right-click the layer thumbnail on the Layers panel, you will see that they are not automatically grouped.
After upgrading to LR5.2.0 I decided to give it a try. I was having performance problems with LR4, so I decided to take the plunge. After a couple hours of trying to figure out what items in LR5.2.0 were causing the issues, I decided to delete the LR4 folder from my profile, without deleting any of the older version of LR.
