How do I know if a file I am accessing is stored locally or in a data center on Amazon EC2

I’m using Amazon EC2 as a development machine. Sometimes I need to know if I’m looking at a file that is stored in my local machine or on Amazon’s datacenter.
Is there a way to determine that?
I’ve heard that you could look at the headers. But I’m not exactly sure how to interpret them.
Does anyone know if this is possible?

You can access the file system on your instance using a couple of means.
Using sftp (the command line version of scp) you can connect to the instance using your shell:
> sftp xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

If you don’t have a shell, then you can install one on your instance using an Amazon AMI. If you don’t know how to do that, then the instance admin can help you.
You can also use any of several SSH clients, including WinSCP, Plink, and you can download a Windows client called Putty.
Finally, you can also use any FTP client that supports SSH. The advantage of this method is that you can use any SFTP client, including the command line version.

I do it by accessing it via a unix domain socket, which is mapped to the file server at /tmp. If you’re able to connect to that unix socket using a unix shell, then you can be pretty sure that the file is stored on a file server that you have direct access to.
