Electroencephalograms of 26 patients with epilepsy of different localization syndromes were investigated by a procedure to define the degree of deviation of the mean density of localized paroxysmal discharges from the mean density of paroxysmal activity of the complete EEG. The degree of deviation is calculated as the fraction of the time-averaged number of hot spots observed in the region of interest to the total number of time-averaged hot spots observed in the entire EEG. Linear and nonlinear measures of EEG complexity, correlation dimension, and critical exponent were used to characterize the processes underlying the EEG hot spots. The results showed a positive, linear relation between local and global complexity and a negative relation between local and global complexity and degree of localization. When the local degree of localization deviated from the global degree of localization, the complexity decreased significantly, whereas the local degree of correlation increased. The degree of local correlation was most strongly correlated to the degree of localization. The local degree of normalization had an inverse relation to the global degree of localization and to the degree of complexity. The relation between local correlation and degree of localization was much stronger than the relation between local normalization and degree of localization.
